As leading providers of critical digital infrastructure across the UK and Ireland, Telent is committed to reducing the impact we have on the environment by providing sustainable and effective solutions for our customers. In doing so we will minimise our impact on the environment, work to reduce carbon emissions and continually improve and enhance our environmental performance. By reducing our carbon emissions, we can make a positive difference to the long-term sustainability targets of our business, our partners, and the community.
In 2021, we have been setting ambitious sustainability targets for environmental betterment and following our commitment to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI) and we have published our annual sustainability report. Covering the financial year to March 2021, the report highlights just how we are playing our part in facilitating a greener planet, and how our long-term sustainability goals align with environmental targets set in Westminster and by devolved administrations across the UK.
As outlined in the report, Telent will ensure the responsible, sustainable and ethical procurement of all goods and services, fulfil all present and future environmental compliance obligations, and will rigorously work to minimise all unsustainable disposal of waste, energy consumption and carbon emissions.
A sustainable future ahead for Telent
Telent has made significant steps to reduce energy consumption in fleet, waste disposal and carbon emissions. We have exceeded our 2015 carbon emissions pledge with an impressive overall calculated reduction of 31%. We have also seen significant progress towards our commitment to zero-waste to landfill with consistent performance of less than 2% sent to landfill over that last 12 months. Our total waste arisings continue to reduce year on year with a 14% reduction of waste in the last financial year.
Throughout 2021, we have taken proactive steps to ensure that we fulfil our promises in minimising environmental impact and carbon footprint, including the introduction of the paperless eDocs solution, which significantly saves paper, ink, electricity and time. Additionally, we have continued to apply a zero-carbon rating for the electricity and gas supplied to our building, ensuring more sustainable power usage for the foreseeable future.
As part of our ongoing management strategy, we have also committed to reducing the use of energy in our buildings and reducing emissions from our vehicle fleet. This includes the strategic selection of the best vehicles, considering fuel efficiency, electric transmission, and emissions performance in purchasing decisions. To date our proactive approach has reduced average fleet vehicle CO2 emissions from 127g/km to 114g/km. We are dedicated in continuing to work towards a net-zero carbon future, as we collaborate with our partners to fully comply with sustainability targets.
