Telent delivers major end-to-end mobilisation communication upgrade for NHS trusts

Telent equips 16,500 paramedics across 11 ambulance trusts with complete end-to-end support from on-scene to control rooms.

Leading mission critical communication provider, Telent, has transformed end-to-end mobilisation communications in 11 NHS ambulance trusts across England and Wales as part of the upgraded NHS Ambulance Radio Programme (ARP).

A major part of the enhanced communication upgrade is the Mobile Data Vehicle Solution (MDVS) initiative. Just over 6,500 ambulance service vehicles have been fitted with new Panasonic TOUGHBOOK touchscreen tablet devices and vehicle data routers.

Telent installed the TOUGHBOOK devices enabling paramedics to move away from a screen-based interface to audio communications only in line with the Road Traffic Act, from the Department of Transport (DoT), involving the safe usage of mobile devices for emergency service drivers. The upgraded in-vehicle technology aims to streamline communications between paramedics and ambulance control rooms.

As part of the MDVS project, Telent established 56 installation facilities close to each ambulance trust to allow the team to complete a major fleet upgrade quickly and efficiently, minimising ambulance downtime for each Trust.

Additionally, Telent is providing Control Room Operator Position Support (CROPS) solutions across 33 control rooms, enhancing communications for over 839 control room operators.

As part of the end-to-end communication upgrade, the control room enhancements will support control room operator positions, supporting them with rising demand in 999 calls and ensuring constant connectivity throughout the ambulance trust. These enhanced communications ensure better information sharing between control rooms and ambulances, allowing paramedics to discuss vital medical information to treat patients quickly on scene.

To complete the full mobilisation communication upgrade, late in 2024 Telent began to take on the support of hand-portable devices used by frontline staff and has now fully transitioned the operational support for all 20,000+ devices across the ten Trusts. Beginning in September of this year, Telent will then begin the deployment of more than 16,500 new ESN ready Sepura SCL3 hand-portable devices across the Trusts.

This enhanced line of communication will ensure that paramedics receive key information about an incident they are attending, including risks to their safety and relevant patient history.

Telent’s delivery on this project supporting ARP to deliver a whole communication upgrade, from control rooms to in-vehicle ambulance technology to paramedic support, ensures that the Trusts are ready for the Emergency Services Network (ESN) transition.

By ensuring the Trust's end-to-end mobilisation communications are ESN compatible, this will future proof the Trust’s communication technology, ready for the transition to ESN.
