Sustainability through technology

As electric vehicles (EVs) become more mainstream, the costs associated with switching to them are rapidly dropping and there are a wide variety of other benefits for drivers who make the switch. From the positive effects of reducing your environmental impact, to the savings you can make on fuel, tax and maintenance costs, electric vehicles here to stay and have the potential to save significant amounts of money. On a cost per mile basis alone, a fully electric car could cost you a quarter or less of what a traditional petrol or diesel car might.

Telent's Environmental and Sustainability pledges

This is reflected in the number of pure EVs registered in the UK, a number that nearly trebled in 2020 to 108,205. Having made up just 1.6% of the UK new car market in 2019, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) soared to 6.6% last year and evidence suggests that few people who go electric then switch back to an internal-combustion engine (ICE). Clearly, a significant transformation is happening.

Telent are a part of this transformation and in support of our Telent Environmental and Sustainability Policy and our objective to be more sustainable by reducing our environmental impact and associated carbon footprint, Telent have been using Electric Vehicles since 2019 for the Transport for London maintenance contract.

The benefits of Electric Vehicles

When you examine the many benefits of going electric, it’s no surprise that the popularity of EVs is surging. From a purely environmental point of view the advantages are compelling, with clean tailpipe emissions generating zero local air pollution. In today’s world where the early effects of manmade climate change are already being felt across the globe and scientific consensus warning of a very difficult future if efforts to reduce our collective carbon footprint and mitigate the damage already done aren’t immediately implemented, an EV is and practical way to take steps in the right direction.

Refuelling costs are typically less than half that of a petrol car and the financial burden of maintain an EV is considerably less when you consider that no longer will you have to purchase petrol/diesel or pay road tax if you’re driving a zero emissions vehicle and the overall maintenance costs are lower too. Company car tax includes incentives to go electric too, providing major savings for businesses. If you’re London based, you receive exemption from the London congestion charge until 2025 and the low emissions zones like the London ULES or Birmingham clean air zone.

Telent and EV’s

An EV has zero exhaust emissions but do still creates a degree of greenhouse gas emissions when it is charged from the electricity used from the grid. However, the fleet of vehicles used in support of the TfL contract has helped Telent reduce our carbon emissions and reduce the associated local air pollution in and around London. Telent now have 9 Electric vehicles in use and are looking to increase this number. In the last 12 months this has saved over 8 TonnesCO2e emissions and the associated air pollution compared with using existing combustion engines.

The amount of CO₂ saved is calculated using the following assumptions: the average EV consumes 1kWh every 4 miles; the average petrol car emits 0.28kg of CO₂ per mile; and the electricity used by an EV will create the equivalent of 0.14kg of CO₂ per mile. We use the DEFRA figure of 0.49kg per kWh of electricity produced.

Telent Planned Maintenance Manager, Matt Bateman currently works on the TFL contract and has been involved with the successful introduction of the Telent EV’s since their introduction in April 2019. He also provides familiarisation training for everyone before they use these vehicles as there are obviously some key differences when driving them compared to traditional diesel or petrol engines.

They are really good to be honest, easy to drive as they are automatic, which is especially good for driving around London. You need to adapt your driving style due to the regenerative charging of the batteries when you brake but you soon get used to this and I believe this also helps to adopt a safer driving style. When engineers have not driven them before, the familiarisation training I provide is key to ensuring any anxiety about running out of charge and how they drive etc are all dealt with. There are significant cost benefits due to the reduced fuel costs, maintenance, tax and by not having to pay for the Ultra- Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) charges which apply in London. In 2 years use we have only had 2 instances where engineers have had to stop off during a shift to re-charge and this only involved a brief stop for half an hour to charge up. The vans are re-charged at Pirin Court during the day and ready to go in time for the night shift.
