Telent is committed to helping reach the UK’s climate target to deliver ‘net zero’ emissions by 2050 and the first important step in realising this ambition is implementing a plan that aims to reduce our overall carbon footprint by 50%, no later than 2035.
Since signing up the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), we have made significant progress in measuring our overall carbon footprint and developing emissions reduction targets for submission in June 2022. Importantly, this isn’t just the carbon emissions that we create directly, but also the emissions created indirectly within our entire value chain, from supplier to customer.
How are we reducing emissions?
We have made substantial progress in addressing direct emissions, reducing our carbon intensity by more than 35% since 2015, while continuing to grow our business. Our notable company achievements include procuring fully renewable energy for our key sites and the significant reduction in energy consumption from investing in energy-saving technologies. Additionally, have also replaced more than 140 vehicles with hybrid, zero, and ultra-low emissions vehicles and diverted 98% of our business waste away from landfill.
In November 2020, we were awarded an EcoVadis Silver Medal in recognition of our sustainability achievements to date. Telent’s percentile score was higher than 92% of other companies assessed in the industry, which increases confidence further that we can honour our long-term carbon emissions targets.
The next steps
We have made inroads in significantly reducing our direct carbon footprint, however there is still progress to be made in order to achieve ‘Net Zero’ by 2050. We are now collaborating with our value chain to reduce our indirect emissions, as it is estimated that more than 80% of our overall emissions are from indirect sources, such as purchased goods and services.
Going forward, we will continue to deeply consider the full environmental impact of our business, focusing on innovation in key areas such as product and service design, operational policies, customer engagement, and environmentally ethical procurement choices.
We will set specific carbon reduction goals in four business critical areas which make up the largest sources of our emissions, which are:
- Fleet - direct emissions from our company vehicles.
- Purchased goods and services - indirect emissions in the goods and services we purchase and sell to our customers.
- Use of sold products - indirect emissions from customers using the products we have sold to them (energy use).
- Capital goods - indirect emissions in the capital goods (equipment) we purchase to deliver our services.
In July 2022 we will deliver a comprehensive carbon reduction report for validation by the SBTi. In order to make the biggest impact possible, we will be collaborating with our entire value chain to reduce our largest source of emissions. We will publish our annual long-term plans with detailed targets for a fully sustainable ‘Net Zero’ future at Telent.
