Telent, the mission-critical technology solutions provider, has successfully completed the nationwide rollout of Corporate Wide Area Network services for National Highways, connecting over 124 strategic sites across the UK in just three months. It’s a significant milestone in the modernisation of the organisation’s digital infrastructure.
The project was launched for the migration of National Highways’ corporate network estate from the incumbent provider. The delivery included a national SD-WAN solution, dual datacentre deployments, management system delivery, and both remote and on-site engineering support.
Throughout the onboarding programme, the transition to the new SD-WAN connectivity solution was executed seamlessly, leading to enhanced service levels and significantly improved network capabilities. This success was driven by comprehensive collaboration, thorough pre-site testing, proactive communications, and a well-coordinated cutover strategy at each location.
Key Project Highlights
124 sites designed, built, integrated, migrated and onboarded between March and June 2025, with each site receiving a combination of on-site and remote engineering services
Meticulous planning and rigorous pre-site testing prevented any visible disruptions for end users during onboarding.
5,400 average daily users connected to the new corporate network.
74 terabytes of data transferred daily, supporting essential applications and services.
Significantly enhanced bandwidth and performance, with measured post-cutover speeds showing marked improvements over previous benchmarks
The sites covered include regional operations centres, head offices, depots, and outstations, forming the digital backbone for National Highways' IT critical systems and staff. Each site migration was managed to strict change control processes, with coordinated stakeholder engagement and approvals to limit operational impact. The upgraded infrastructure supports business applications, inter-site collaboration, and secure data access, contributing directly to the efficiency of services that underpin the safe and reliable operation of the UK's road network.
This has been a complex project involving the live migration of National Highways’ entire corporate network connectivity. Completing it in such a short timeframe, whilst enhancing the performance and capability of the service, is a fantastic achievement. Again, this is testament to the collaboration and engagement across our organisations in the delivery of critical technology services.
"The project was awarded through Telent’s position on the National Highways Information Technology Commercial Framework (ITCF) and forms a key part of the broader transformation agenda, including ongoing work on the National Roads Telecommunications Service (NRTS).
As National Highways prepares for the next phase of digital infrastructure innovation, including the upcoming NRTS3 programme, the success of the Corporate Wide Area Network services rollout provides a blueprint for fast, scalable, and reliable network transformation.
