A road to sustainability via remote monitoring efficiency

The remote monitoring of assets is key to optimizing efficiency and resource utilisation. Empowered by Internet of Things (IoT) devices and technologies, most remote monitoring comprises of the following elements. Firstly, IoT devices are a variety of internet-connected devices deployed to enable remote monitoring of assets and include temperature sensors, vibration sensors and HD cameras.

Network Service

Cloud Computing Infrastructure provides the means for scalable storage and processing of data from multiple IoT devices. As there is a need for processing sensor data close to the field because real-time detection of problems is required, edge and fog computing devices can be employed to enable data analysis close to the field.

Most remote monitoring extracts insights on the condition of the various assets and processes based on the analysis of large volumes of data by means of IoT analytics algorithms, which include machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques. Data Visualization Dashboards enable the visualisation of elements that present insights to end-users whilst for Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) remotely collected data can be used to build ergonomic cyber-representation of assets and processes based on these technologies.

The synergy of these data collecting, processing and visualising technologies allows for Telent to make asset monitoring a far more efficient, sustainable, and effective task.

Time, cost & carbon cuts

For example, remote data collection can be used to fine-tune the operating systems to help avoid failures of key assets. It also boosts the environmental performance of service delivery by reducing time and travel emissions and enables managers to help implement effective maintenance solutions.

The remote monitoring of assets is key for the implementation of novel maintenance models such as condition-based maintenance and maintenance as a service. Through remote monitoring, Telent can analyse asset information and get maintenance recommendations without the need to travel to sites, cutting carbon emissions.

In addition, the data obtained by Telent remotely monitoring equipment assets laid the foundation for effective predictive maintenance approaches. This leads to optimizing equipment utilization and minimizing equipment downtime.

With remote monitoring, Telent has real-time visibility on the status of our customers’ assets and services. We can detect and respond to situations that require attention faster and apply mitigation plans in a timely manner. Faster responses lead to cost savings as they prevent the problems from escalating.

Personnel efficiencies

Remote monitoring enables remote inspections. Remote inspections reduce the need for hands-on work. In many cases, data that would be otherwise gathered manually can be monitored and analysed off-site.

With a significant skills gap in qualified personnel for processes like inspections, maintenance, and engineering service, remote monitoring reduces the number of personnel that must be deployed in physical locations. It also provides more flexibility in planning hands-on processes.

Remote monitoring also enables organizations to integrate information about many assets and processes, regardless of time and the location of the assets. In this way, a customer gains a 360-degree view of their operations and optimizes their management. Thanks to remote management, an operator is no longer bound to a local view of their assets and processes. Rather, they can instantly consolidate information about the performance of the organization while calculating relevant KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) like Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) and total carbon (CO2) emissions.

What we’re doing

Telent has been undertaking remote monitoring for 20 years with customers such as Transport for London (TFL) and London Underground and is continuing to investigate new opportunities this digital delivery option can bring to our clients.

Telent has seen a 20% reduction total in reported Digital Video Recording faults and 24% remote fixes. The following metrics can all be monitored remotely to give early warning of failure:

Temperature

Fan speeds (RPM)

System availability

Video input / being recorded

Computer Processor utilisation

Memory

Application services

The above examples of remote monitoring have saved Telent in the last year approximately 4500 journeys, equivalent to over 200 thousand miles to physically visit sites and with associated carbon emissions savings of over 60 Tonnes CO2e.
