Telent adds fire detection and alarm service to rail station management offering

Critical infrastructure specialist Telent has attained fire detection and alarm system accreditations, enabling the company to provide upgrades to rail, metro and underground station operators looking to improve fire safety.

Telent, an established provider of station management solutions for regional train operating companies (TOCs), Network Rail and Transport for London, has passed stringent BAFE accreditation testing to deliver the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of detection and alarm system services.

Telent has also received an accreditation (BAFE SP101) to source, install and maintain portable fire extinguishers.

These accreditations follow Telent’s recently announced progress on a contract award from Transport for London (TfL), to upgrade fire safety capabilities at Canary Wharf Elizabeth line station. Working for Rail for London Infrastructure (RfLI), Telent is removing redundant elements, and simplifying the previous configuration to enhance user-friendliness. The project is also simplifying the task of upgrading assets for future improvements.

Ben Armstrong, Account Director – London Underground at Telent

“With our extensive experience working at rail stations across the UK, from national transport hubs to local underground stations, coupled with our expertise of safety protocols and station management systems, we are confident about our capability to expand into fire safety services. Building on these successful accreditations from BAFE, we plan to complete further certifications as we develop our fire business and look forward to continuing our work with the rail industry to improve and maintain safety at stations.”

As part of the accreditation process, Telent provided voluntary fire safety services to Cody Dock, a creative and community hub on the River Lea in Newham, East London. The space, which was previously derelict, was revitalised with National Lottery funding and offers programmes to local schools to teach students about ecology, building skills and more.

Telent’s other work in the fire industry has involved designing and implementing a solution to remotely monitor and manage station fire isolations. The Remote Fire Isolation Project (RFIP) makes it easier for engineering work to be carried out safely, avoiding dust or smoke arising from works triggering evacuation alarms.
