This case study explores how the digital design team can capture a 3D data set known as a point cloud.
This data can be manipulated within different 3D design software to produce a variety of engineering applications.
- Digital asset tagging: Enabling the maintenance teams to visit site “virtually” identify equipment and produce work plans prior to setting foot on site
- CCTV/DOO(P): Simulation of the platform train interface, in mili-metrically accurate 3D environments to identify optical views for offset verification
- Equipment simulations: Accurate depiction of virtual equipment in the 3D space for off-site positional agreement with clients
Environmental benefits
Telent's 3D virtual space initiative offers significant potential for streamlining operations and reducing environmental impact. By creating a digital representation of physical sites, Telent can leverage the reduction of cost and Co2 emissions through:
- Centralise Information: Store and access all relevant data (CCTV optical and location designs, project surveys, maintenance planning, equipment tagging) in a single, easily searchable location.
- Improve Collaboration: Facilitate collaboration among teams by providing a shared visual workspace.
- Optimise Planning: Conduct virtual site surveys, design CCTV systems, and plan maintenance activities more efficiently.
- Reduce Site Visits: Minimise the need for on-site visits, leading to cost savings and reduced carbon emissions.
Savings include:
- For each site visit Telent estimates an average reduction of just over £500 and an average saving of 196kg CO2
- Over multiple projects the savings are a direct multiple of the number of site visits avoided
Telent is building a database of sites and looking to a future where optical and location designs, project survey and maintenance planning and equipment tagging can all be carried out in a virtual 3D space. Supported by Telent’s remote monitoring capabilities, this will further leverage reductions in site visits and therefore CO2 emissions and cost
"Telent's Environment and Sustainability Vision is to be a leading partner in the road to net zero, providing outstanding service and solution offerings that help deliver its customers’ climate action ambitions, and partnering with the supply chain to enhance and support the communities affected by Telent's choices and operations.
To support this vision, Telent has introduced the Green Solutions Working Group (GSWG), a team of colleagues committed to exploring and implementing innovative sustainability initiatives at Telent.
As part of the group’s aims, it’s developing a range of case studies that highlight some of the amazing work we at Telent are already doing and are planning. These case studies reflect Telent’s commitment to its sustainability vision and demonstrate the progress being made to benefit the environment and support colleagues, the customer, and the supply chain.
