Telent supports TfL's vision for a greener, more sustainable transport network

Telent has recently invested in new fully electric vehicles to support Transport for London's (TfL) vision for a greener, more sustainable transport network and to meet our Science Based Targets for carbon reduction.

In 2023, Telent became one of the first telecommunications companies in the UK to have carbon reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This includes committing to a 50 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030, on a path to Net Zero. Achieving these ambitious targets requires full-scale decarbonisation of our fleet and indirect emissions within our value chain.

As one of Telent’s longest-standing customers, we’re committed to supporting TfL in creating an environmentally sustainable transport network to help London meet its air quality and carbon targets. This includes cutting operational emissions to support the mayor’s ambition to make London a carbon-neutral city by 2030.

Decarbonising our fleet

As part of this contract, Telent’s Asset Management team committed to operating a fully electric fleet of maintenance vehicles to support London in meeting its social value targets around air quality and carbon. In May 2024, after working with the Fleet team to assess the market and select the optimum vehicles for our needs, we began taking delivery of brand-new Volkswagen ID. Buzz vans.

These vans not only produce zero tailpipe emissions but also offer:

Enhanced urban mobility: A compact design that makes them well-suited for city driving, offering better manoeuvrability in tight spaces and traffic

Additional environmental benefits: Quiet operation to reduce noise pollution in the city

Technology integration: Advanced telematics and connectivity features that allow us to monitor vehicle performance in real time

Safety first: Platinum safety rating from Euro NCAP

In addition to the ID. Buzz vans, we’re also rolling out Skoda Enyaq electric vehicles for our support and management colleagues, which have a long electric range and are designed with spacious interiors and modern features. With fewer parts that can wear out or break, we expect to see increased uptime and reliability from our electric vehicles, which is key to delivering our critical services.

New ways of working

Transitioning to electric vehicles requires significant investment in infrastructure and changes to our operations. Our teams have been working hard to ensure a smooth transition and to provide the driver support and training needed to make the most of the new technology and promote safety at all times.

"

We’re thrilled to lead the way in sustainable transport solutions with our new electric fleet and I commend our Field Operatives and Management team for their dedication and hard work in mobilising it. The transition represents a significant milestone in our partnership with TfL and Telent’s commitment to sustainability. This initiative not only supports London's ambitious carbon targets but also ensures that our operations remain efficient and reliable, while contributing to a greener, quieter city.

Senior Operations Manager – Asset Management

As new projects are being mobilised, we will have over 100 fully electric vehicles operating in the city by March 2025. This transition will significantly reduce our carbon footprint and, in turn, lower TfL’s environmental impact.

Carbon Progress

Telent is committed to using technology, innovation and supplier relationship management to reduce our environmental impact and deliver maximum value for money to our customers. Our Fleet team is committed to ensuring that each business unit receives the right support to meet Telent’s operational and environmental goals.

The team is actively collaborating with each business unit to develop tailored EV transition plans that address their unique requirements. By working closely with every area, proposed solutions will be aligned with specific scopes of work, vehicle needs and customer priorities. This approach will support each team in finding the most effective and practical solutions for their transition to EVs.

Through proactive supplier engagement, we have also successfully reduced the intensity of our supply chain emissions by 38 per cent since FY20. This significant reduction underscores our commitment to addressing all aspects of our carbon footprint and working collaboratively with our partners to drive meaningful progress.

Committed to excellence

In June, Telent successfully retained its Silver accreditation from the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS), highlighting the company's commitment to high standards in fleet management and operations, and solidifying its reputation for excellence.

The FORS Silver accreditation is a prestigious recognition awarded to fleet operators demonstrating exceptional commitment to safety, efficiency, and environmental protection. The scheme aims to enhance fleet performance and ensure adherence to best practices. Achieving Silver status indicates that Telent’s Fleet team not only meets but exceeds the stringent audit requirements set by FORS, underscoring its dedication to excellence.
