Telent has successfully delivered a transformative upgrade to West Sussex County Council’s traffic signal network, replacing outdated halogen lamps with advanced LED technology.
This project demonstrates Telent’s expertise in managing complex infrastructure programmes and delivering sustainable, future-proof solutions - supported by civil engineering partner Landbuild Ltd. The £6.4 million Halogen Replacement Programme saw Telent upgrade 94 traffic signal sites with new signal heads, advanced controllers, detectors, poles, and cabling. The result:
Beyond energy efficiency, Telent integrated puffin crossing technology to improve pedestrian safety and reduce congestion, alongside accessibility enhancements such as tactile paving and resurfaced footways. Our collaborative approach ensured smooth delivery, minimal disruption, and enhanced reliability - reducing hazardous maintenance hours by 90 annually.
This programme was never just about replacing lamps. It’s a major investment in the future of our highways network and an important part of the council’s transport strategy to improve road safety and reduce congestion by helping traffic flow more efficiently. As well as improving safety, reliability and operational performance, the LED upgrade aligns with the council’s focus on achieving long-term value for public investment. It also supports the council's Climate Action and Adaptation Plan through forecast carbon savings.
"This programme demonstrates Telent’s ability to deliver sustainable, future-proof solutions for critical infrastructure. By working in close partnership with West Sussex County Council, we’ve created a safer, more efficient traffic signal network that will deliver long-term value for the community while supporting the council’s climate and transport goals
